From: Self To: NR-L,TRC-L Subject: Karlsruhe City Grid 2nd tourney Copies to: Jennifer Clarke Wilkes, Matthias Nagy Send reply to: Lukas Kautzsch Date sent: Mon, 16 Nov 1998 15:47:12 +0100 On last Saturday (98/11/14) Karlsruhe City Grid, Germany, staged its second official NR tourney, hosted by the 13.Karlsruher Spieletage (Games Days), organized by the games club Thoule e.V. The turnout was even higher than expected with 9 guests from other cities (2 of them joining Karlsruhe City Grid at this occasion), 2 players from Karlsruhe and 5 members of Thoule e.V. some of whom had played NR "some years ago" and wanted to give it another try, for a total of 16. The format was Sealed Deck (one starter, two 1.0 boosters), 4 rounds Swiss system, scoring by GMP, tiebreaker opponents' GMP total. Prizes were donated by WotC (actually the prize package hasn't yet arrived, but I supplied the cards from my personal reserves) and Thoule e.V. Final result: opp. GMP GMP games matches AP 1. And in that last game both sides had 6 AP scored when Holger installed something in his "big" subsidiary data fort (with 2 unrezzed ice, a small codegate and a TKO) and advanced it twice. Christian had just drawn through his complete stack finding Short-Term Contract and Broker as the last two cards (but having used 2 Databrokers before) and decided that his bit pool wouldn't be sufficient for the run so he just re-filled the Broker and hoped that the something wasn't an agenda - in vein, as Holger happily put 3 more advancement counters on it and won the game and the tournament. As it turned out, Christian would have had just enough bits to force Holger to spend all his money on rezzing ice while (Christian) still having enough left to go through all the way his next turn. Boy, that was close! During the tournament I had the opportunity to show NR to some (about) 12-year old kids (already knowing TOG, of course) and they grabbed the principles surprisingly quickly (don't forget that English is not their native language). The first two of them introduced other friends later, and all of them were supplied with some starters and boosters at bargain prices by Karlsruhe City Grid. Who said NR was dead? The next tournament of Karlsruhe City Grid is tentatively scheduled for December 12th, 12:00 high noon, at the PTV-Haus, Stumpfstrasse 1. It will be Sealed Deck again (entry fee DM 15 including one double-starter and two 1.0 boosters). (Jennifer, would you send me a prize package for that one, please?)
